When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?

A real estate client of mine gave me a book to read.  The book was titled Younger Next Year For Women by Chris Crowley.   I was starting to feel my age.  I’m 57.  One day I was in my truck bed unloading feed and I sat down to rest.  I could not get back up without rolling around like a baby walrus.  I remembered in that book it stated that if you are a woman from ages 45-80 it is very possible for you to eliminate 70 percent of the bone decay and 50 percent of the injuries and illness associated with aging.  It said that you can actually reverse joint aging as well. You can become functionally younger.  But, you have to trick your old body into thinking it is young again by doing extreme activity.   I decided I had better do something or I was going to end up like some of my friends that can’t run or have lots of joint pain and injuries.  I started CrossFitting back in January 2016 (I think) with the Six Week Challenge, but I took a six month break due to getting a chunk of cancer cut out of my arm.  Little did I know that I would become obsessed the second time around.  

What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?

My favorite WOD is any of the hero WODs.  The hero WODs give you a sense of giving back or support for our troops-the people that give their all for our freedom.  My least favorite would be any WOD with burpees.  However, I continue to get better at them.  

What is your favorite/least favorite movement?

My favorite movement is the deadlift.  I think it’s the only one that I can do correctly.    It is a very easy movement for me.  Least favorite movement is over-head squat. 

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

My jobs include being a real estate agent for Keller Williams, owner of Midwest Metal Building Repair and owner of Keepin’ It Reel Deep Sea Fishing Tours.  I have four great children that I adore and two grandchildren (and another on the way in March) that I adore more.  I love horses and DOGS!!!!!

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?

My workout routine before CrossFit was basically just taking care of the ranch.  Back in the day, I was a high yellow belt in taekwondo and also enjoyed kickboxing matches.  

What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?

I was very intimidated the first time I went into the “general public”.   I was all nervous that I would do something wrong and that people would wonder what in the world was this old lady doing here.  It was the total opposite.  EVERYONE was so nice and helped me with every move and cheered me on.  It was such a positive experience and continues to be.  When I travel I always try to find a CrossFit box.   While it’s always great, it’s not the same as going to CrossFit 913. 

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?  Have you achieved any of those goals?

My goals when joining CrossFit were to just be able to do everyday functions around the house and barn.  I have far exceeded that goal.  My new goal is to be able to do pull-ups and climb the rope.  

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

CrossFit has affected my life by making me more aware of what I am eating and also how I am treating others in my life.  It has taught me to be patient with myself and others.  It also taught me not to drink an entire bottle of wine and expect to have a great WOD the next day.  LOL.  

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?

A very special memory was when I was stranded on the AB and everyone stayed to see me through.  That was awesome and something I will never forget. 

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?

The advice to a newbie is to listen to the coaches.  They all have great qualities and advice.  The best is:  “Just show up.  We will do the rest.”  Oh, and I also like: “Give 1% more everyday.”  Another (while doing burpees)  “Just go down and get back up.  It’s that simple.”  You guys are great!

Something you might not know about me is?

Something you might not know about me is that I used to rodeo.  I was a member of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and traveled to every fair and small town around.   I met singer Chris LeDoux at one of the rodeos.  I know, I know; none of you guys have ever heard of him.  Hahaha.  I was cleaning my horses hoof out and a black limousine pulled up and the back window rolled down and the guy took his sunglasses off.  It was Chris LeDoux.  It was pretty cool.  He showed up at the rodeo to do a surprise concert.  I believe it was one of his last concerts.
